Web - Aesthetics

Would you use this?

Map

An interactive 'Pin-in-the-Map' style web-app that you can use to show your own travel itinerary. You would add paths, flight numbers, stop-offs etc... then have the ability to send to friends/family etc.

Would you use something like that?
I've already begun looking into it - check it out here - what do you think?

Design Inspiration

Smashing

There are some things I find myself having to design that really don’t require me to re-invent the wheel. Things like blogs, comments and footers. They’re always the same, they work, they don’t need to change. Probably means they always end up looking the same though. Right? Probably! No... I mean, WRONG! Here are some resources I use to inspire these kinds of things;

Designing blog comments:

Footers:

To be honest, pretty much all of the examples are terrible – but there are some nice ideas that you could develop to make something cool.

Bored of Lightbox?

Go to Fancy Zoom!!

When I launched v.1 of BuzzGraphics in the late 90’s it was full of image preload scripts, blank.gif’s, tables and all kinds of coding badness – and one other thing.... LightBox. Back then, the wonderment of having LightBox on the page made up for everything – it made any image look good, and would even impress your mum. But then 8 or 9 years passed, and LightBox is still being used – by everyone!

So now I’m bored of LightBox. I’ve recently moved to the amazing LightView on BuzzGraphics (because it supports way more than just images, and is easier to understand from a UI point of view) – but there’s a whole host of other JavaScript and (ahem) Flash galleries you can use. We still love you, LightBox – you’re just... old.

Rainfall Daffinson

I was checking out the (amazing!) website of the very talented Rainfall Daffinson when I came across a cool, but completely useless tool on their website;

Visit the Color Mixer!

The color mixer alows you to change the look and feel of the site using a PhotoShop-esque RGB selection. All without a page refresh! I'm told it's a very clever mix of JavaScript and cookies. Worth keeping an eye on this script, as it could have considerable use in a few web applications I can think of.

Icon Inspiration

Today I came across IconWerk.de - which is by far the most impressive collection of icons I have ever seen on the web! An absolute must see!

Iconwerk.de

Nice to see something other than typical Web 2.0/Apple Aqua icons for a change!

Stripe Generator

If, like me, you LOVE stripes on your website - then you'll probably love Stripe Generator! An AJAX tool that will let you create those repeating stripes that you'll see everywhere!

Lightbox

I've always been a secret fan of Huddle Together's 'Lightbox' - it just doesn't look too professional on corporate sites. But recently, since Apple started using a variation of it (have a look) - my interest is increasing!

Lightbox

Have a look at 'Light Window' by Stickman Labs - which showcases some cool variations on this Javascript beauty.

Embed your type!

SIFR (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) allows your client to use their own custom typeface without any platform issues. I noticed Waitrose had done this with their new website.
